European readers are unable to access a number of high-profile U.S. websites today as companies struggle to adapt to new European regulations governing digital privacy. Under the new rules, known as General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which come into force today, companies and associations operating in the European Union must get express consent to track users habits, collect personal information, and send people emails. News sites operated by Tronc and Lee Enterprises were among those caught out by the changes. Tronc’s high-profile sites include the New York Daily News and the L.A. Times. Lee Enterprises publishes 46 daily newspapers across 21 states that are also unavailable to European readers today.
