The United States reopened the border between Tijuana and San Diego Sunday night, after closing it earlier in the day when some migrants reportedly tried to push their way through the border. On Sunday afternoon, hundreds of migrants protesting a backlog of asylum claims rushed toward the border, prompting U.S. officials to fire tear gas at the crowd on the Mexico side and shut down the San Ysidro Port of Entry—one of the busiest crossing points on the border—for nearly seven hours. Traffic in both directions has now resumed, according to tweets from San Diego’s Department of Border Patrol. But the most significant obstacle most migrants face—Trump’s tightening of the eligibility of asylum-seekers—has not yet been resolved.
