Rather than sending arms only to Baghdad, the U.S. has begun providing weapons directly to Kurdish peshmerga fighters in Iraq who have been making gains against ISIS insurgents, according to senior U.S. officials. The officials would not disclose which U.S. agency is providing the arms or which weapons are being sent, but one did say it was not the Pentagon. The decision to arm the Kurds reflects the Obama administration’s view that Iraqis must take steps to solve their own problems. A plan for the Pentagon to arm the Kurds is also close to being approved.
