The U.S. Department of Homeland Security unveils tough new security mesures Friday in response to the failed December attack on a Detroit-bound flight. The new measures involve the use of intelligence data for passengers headed to the U.S. Travelers at foreign airports would face additional scrutiny based on whether intel indicated to watch for a certain type of individual—for example, someone with a particular age range who has a particular travel history. "It's much more tailored to what the intel is telling us, what the threat is telling us, as opposed to stopping all individuals of a particular nationality or all individuals using a particular passport," an official told Reuters. On December 25, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to attack a U.S.-bound plane by smuggling explosives in his underwear, but was stopped by passengers and crew.
