We’ve heard of job-killing budget bills, but this is not metaphorical: The head of the U.S. Agency for International Development told Congress that the Republican-led House’s budget bill would result in the death of at least 70,000 children who rely on American aid. “I believe these are very conservative estimates,” USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah said, predicting that 30,000 kids would die from cuts in malaria control programs, 24,000 from lack of immunizations, and 16,000 due to unsafe birthing practices. The budget bill, known as H.R.1, would cut 16 percent from the amount of international aid requested by President Obama.
