New footage from Syria shows women burning their burqas this week to celebrate being liberated from ISIS control in the northern city of Manbij. After fighters consisting largely of the Western-backed Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces successfully pushed ISIS militants out of the area, following several weeks of battle, rescued civilians took to a public square and women burned the traditional robes they were forced to wear by the brutally repressive jihadis. Manbij’s liberation also serves as a key strategic piece in the fight against ISIS, as the city sits along the route between the Turkish border and the militants’ stronghold city of Raqqa.
