This weekend sees the release of both the blockbuster action sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and Richard Linklater’s intimate indie drama Boyhood. On the surface, they couldn’t look more different. Dig a little deeper and the parallels to the two coming of age stories become very clear.

Until, of course, one of them diverges into an apocalyptic battle for species dominance. In the interest of remaining spoiler-free, we won’t say which film.
