The U.S. Census Bureau puts the number of Americans in poverty at levels not seen since the mid-1960s, while $85 billion in federal-government spending cuts that began last month are expected to begin squeezing services for the poor nationwide.

Qing Ming, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, is an annual Chinese festival to commemorate the dead. Families mark the day by visiting and cleaning the graves of their ancestors, burning incense and paper money, and presenting offerings such as food, tea, wine, and joss paper accessories.

According to government officials, Noble Peace Prize laureate and former South African president Nelson Mandela, 94, is continuing to recover from pneumonia after spending more than a week in the hospital, his third time since December.

An Afghan soldier stands guard in a destroyed courthouse a day after suicide bombers disguised as Afghan soldiers stormed it in a failed bid to free more than a dozen Taliban prisoners in western Afghanistan, officials said. Tens of people, including the nine attackers, were reported killed in the fighting. The assault in Farah province was the latest example of the Taliban’s ability to strike official institutions despite tight security measures. With escalating violence in recent months and a government still trying to find its footing, each attack is a reminder of how far the country has still to go.

Authorities in Kuwait hanged three convicted murderers—a Pakistani, a Saudi, and a stateless Arab—in the first executions in the Gulf state since May 2007, the Ministry of Justice said.
