About the Book:
Aravind Adiga has been called “one of the most important voices to emerge from India in recent years,” but not everyone sees him as a rising literary star to be celebrated. His first novel, The White Tiger, was the story of a taxi driver caught at the bottom rung of India’s economic revolution. Its portrayal of the country’s economic imbalance triggered explosive reactions—many in the Indian middle class were enraged at Adiga’s depiction of the middle class as a savage, paranoid caste that treats its servants and underlings like animals.
With his new book, Between the Assassinations, Adiga continues to pull no punches. A series of interconnected stories set in the fictional city of Kittur, the collection shows a wide swath of Indian society operating with ruthless competitiveness at times, and disarming compassion at others. Assassinations has received ample praise and proves that Adiga is no one-hit wonder.
