As the U.S. and European nations back Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman, the prospective leader holds talks with opposition groups. The move to support Suleiman is an attempt to take things slowly: He’s promised an “orderly transition,” say American officials, though this may entail leaving President Mubarak in office and maintaining the one-party political system. Protesters interpreted the support of Suleiman as a rebuff. Though Suleiman appears unwilling to meet protesters’ main demands, he has met with opposition leaders, including the Muslim Brotherhood. Last week, Suleiman urged the brotherhood to participate in talks, calling it a “valuable opportunity” for the group. Reports that Suleiman was the target of an assassination attempt haven’t been confirmed by the state, and the White House would not comment.
