Wildfires in Spain and Portugal have killed at least 31 people and injured 51 more. The Associated Press reports the Portugal blazes began in what officials have called “exceptional” weather circumstances in densely forested areas. Civil Protection Agency spokeswoman Patricia Gaspar said the situation remained “critical” Monday with an unconfirmed number of people still missing. Another wildfire in Portugal killed 64 people in June, when—according to an independent investigation—authorities were late to evacuate villages.
