After a new spike in radiation leaks, the small contingent of workers struggling to prevent a meltdown at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant have fled the scene. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano urged the crew to evacuate, calling radiation levels too unsafe. Officials say that at one of the plant’s reactors, 70 percent of the fuel rods have been significantly damaged, raising fears of a partial meltdown. With workers gone, plans are in place to spray the overheated reactors with water from helicopters and fire trucks.
