Yemen’s Saleh Clings to Power

Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh is refusing to step down from power, despite numerous military defections. On Tuesday, his Republican Guard forces, led by his son, clashed at an air base led by a general who announced his support for the country’s youth revolt. Yemen’s most powerful general has also defected—a blow that many predict Saleh will not survive. Saleh volunteered Tuesday to step down before 2012 but the opposition demanded an immediate resignation.
