YouTube must want to give the VMAs a run for their money. The video-sharing site held its first-ever Video Music Awards Sunday night, hosted by Jason Schwartzman and Reggie Watts and with fans picking all the winners. Despite live performances by Lady Gaga and Eminem, the overall feeling was confused. The event sought to break down boundaries between YouTube viewers and stars. Arcade Fire, for example, kicked things off by leading the crowd through a call-and-response, and frontman Win Butler declared “if you tried this at the VMAs, you’d be [screwed].” But the weird reigned supreme, with Rashida Jones handing out babies (um?) as awards and hosts having to eat cake to find the winner of the response of the year award.
