Facebook just paid $16 billion for an app you've probably never heard of. The company announced Wednesday afternoon its acquisition of WhatsApp, a real-time instant-messaging application with 400 million monthly users, popular in Brazil, South Africa, and Australia. It paid approximately $16 billion, which is 16 times what Facebook paid for Instagram two years ago.
