The Gerard Butler heist film Den of Thieves 2: Pantera topped the box office charts over the weekend with a $15.5 million debut. The total even eclipsed its predecessor’s, which netted $15.2 million at the box office upon its 2018 release—though its $40 million production budget also shot past its prequel as well. Meanwhile, Better Man, the Robbie Williams biopic featuring a CGI monkey standing in for the British pop star, bombed its wide release in the United States, netting only a little over $1 million at the box office over the weekend. The film was produced independently with a budget of $110 million, Variety reported, and Williams himself provides the voiceover for the CGI chimpanzee. Better Man has fared only slightly better overseas, including in the UK where Williams is a household name. Multiple holdovers from the Christmas release season also outperformed the biopic, including Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

One of several woman accusing Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexual misconduct alleged that the music mogul used a remote control to rape her. Ashley Parham, who filed a complaint in October, was interviewed for the upcoming documentary Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy, according to People magazine. “I’ve become incredibly reclusive,” she said. Parham claimed she was at the home of a mutual friend when Combs showed up with multiple others, the complaint alleges. Parham accused Combs of holding a knife to her face and later initiating rape with the remote control. In a statement to People, Combs’s legal team denied the allegations. “This documentary recycles and perpetuates the same lies and conspiracy theories that have been slung against Mr. Combs for months,” they wrote. “As the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department confirmed, her report was thoroughly investigated and it was determined the claims were ‘unfounded.’ Mr. Combs was nowhere near Orinda, California, on the day she claims she was assaulted.” The documentary is scheduled to come out on Tuesday.

Senator Reveals What’s Holding Up Gabbard Confirmation Hearing

Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso said that a paperwork issue is holding up scheduling on a confirmation hearing for Tulsi Gabbard, President-elect Donald Trump’s controversial pick for director of national intelligence. Speaking to Margaret Brennan on Face the Nation, Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) said he was “not concerned at all” that Republicans would not have the votes to approve Gabbard. Confirmation hearings for the president-elect’s Cabinet nominees begin on Monday morning, and have been scheduled through Thursday—but a hearing for Gabbard before the Senate Intelligence Committee has still not been announced. “It’s a paperwork problem right now, with the Office of Government Ethics,” Barrasso told Brennan. “We had hoped to have a hearing later this week, it looks like it’s going to be the following week. But she continues to have promotions in the military, she’s a lieutenant colonel, she now has top level security clearances—she is the right person to keep America secure and safe.” Barrasso also said he supports “every one of these nominees,” and was working to “make sure they get across the finish line.” The former Hawaii congresswoman recently reversed her position on Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act in a bid to shore up support with Republican lawmakers—a provision she once tried to repeal as a Democratic member of the House.

President-elect Donald Trump attacked political foe Jack Smith at least one more time as the special prosecutor resigned from the Justice Department on Friday. The resignation, which comes just days before Trump is set to take office, was somewhat expected after Smith brought cases against Trump pertaining to election interference and mishandling classified documents. “The Stench of Deranged Jack Smith and his thugs is GONE,” wrote Trump in a Sunday morning Truth Social account. “They were sent packing after spending over $100,000,000, destroying the lives of many people and families, who will never be the same again.” Smith resigned just as the Justice Department completed its report, which includes an investigation into Trump’s work to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The report is currently under wraps amid a legal battle that is fighting to block its release. “Deranged Jack accomplished nothing,” wrote Trump, “except to show what complete losers my political opponents are!!!” Smith’s resignation and his report are yet another example of the president-elect defying the odds in his legal spats, with only eight days left until his return to the White House.

Kim Kardashian called for California to raise the wages of its incarcerated firefighter crews following the deadly wildfires that have devastated the state. Kardashian, who evacuated her home due to the blazes, urged the state’s Gov. Gavin Newsom to raise their pay in an Instagram post. They crews earn around $1 per hour. “On all 5 fires in Los Angeles, there are hundreds of incarcerated firefighters, risking their lives to save us,” she wrote on her Instagram story, saying that the crew is working through 24-hour shifts. “They get paid almost nothing, risk their lives, some have died, to prove to the community that they have changed and are now first responders. I see them as heroes.” Kardashian then went on to say that the $1 wage has stayed the same since 1984, and hasn’t been raised with inflation. “This year there was an agreement to raise the incarcerated firefighter pay to $5/hour, but it got shot down last minute,” she continued. “I am urging @cagovernor to do what no governor has done in 4 decades.” The Kardashian clan have also donated meals to firefighters during the fires tearing through Los Angeles, the meals going to four different fire stations, according to reports. Newsom did not publicly respond to Kardashian’s plea.

The “most expensive home” in Pacific Palisades that was used as a set on HBO’s Succession, has burned down, The Daily Mail reports. The multimillion dollar mansion was bought by Luminar Technologies CEO Austin Russel for $83 million in 2021, and was available to rent for a whopping $450,000 per month. The 18-bedroom estate had six bathrooms, a 20-seater theater, and a “Nobu-designed chef’s kitchen,” the outlet adds. It also boasted a temperature-controlled wine cellar and a retractable roof for stargazing, along with a massive swimming pool in the backyard. The house was featured in the fourth season of Succession as a luxury pad for the Roy siblings, Shiv (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Kendall (Jeremy Strong). The Daily Mail adds that the mansion has been completely destroyed, down to its two panic rooms, in the aftermath of the Palisades wildfire. More than 180,000 Los Angeles County residents have been displaced since the fires first began Tuesday. NBC News reports that at least 13 people have died, with more than 150,000 under evacuation orders.

A terrifying “fire tornado” was caught on camera amid the infernos currently devastating Los Angeles. In footage captured by Fox 11, the spinning blaze can be seen swirling above a hillside outside of Santa Monica. The channel’s meteorologist, Adam Krueger, explains in the clip that the phenomenon is similar to a “dust devil” on a baseball field. “When you have air rising quicker in a certain spot and not so much surrounding it,” he said, “you get this updraft, and then all it takes is a little breeze coming from any direction, [which] meets up with that updraft, and it will just kind of naturally spin like a vortex.” The frightening occurrence comes as the wildfires have devastated Southern California. At least 11 people have died, more than a hundred thousand have evacuated, and around 12,000 structures have been destroyed due to the blaze, according to The Associated Press. More than 7,500 firefighters and emergency personnel have been deployed to battle the flames and help those affected by the crisis, according to a press release from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office.

GoFundMe Ripped by L.A. Official Over Fire Fundraiser Fees: ‘Families are Suffering’

A member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Kathryn Barger, criticized fundraising platform GoFundMe’s transactions fees Saturday, claiming she had to pay an additional $95 to donate $500 to a friend affected by wildfires scorching through the area. “I was shocked to find out that to give $500, they were going to charge me $95,” Barger said during a press conference. “So, I’m going to be reaching out to the CEO of GoFundMe to find out if, at the very least, they can cut the cost in order to ensure that the money goes directly to the family.” She added that she understood that GoFundMe is a company and needs to be able to “pay for their overhead” but that “families are suffering.” A spokesperson for GoFundMe told Business Insider that the “comments made at the press conference were inaccurate.” They said that the platform charges 2.9% plus $0.30 for each transaction to help pay “payment processors and safely deliver funds,” with Business Insider adding that that would mean a $500 donation would incur less than $15 in fees.
