Are concessions on the $789 billion stimulus package coming at the price of Democratic unity? Shouting between Calif. Rep. George Miller and Hawaii Rep. Neil Abercrombie was overheard last night during a caucus meeting, Politico reports. While Nancy Pelosi politely described the exchange as "spirited," progressives are disappointed the Senate cut anti-poverty programs and school aid from the thinner stimulus package. With a final vote set for tomorrow, both parties are trying to get the last word. "Nobody thinks this bill is perfect," Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said. "But... Americans urgently need our help." Countered Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, "This bill was meant to be a stimulus that was timely, targeted and temporary... Unfortunately, it appears to be none of the above."
