Could Barack Obama’s mother’s graduate dissertation tell us anything about our President? We’ll find out in the fall, when the late Stanley Ann Dunham’s anthropology thesis is published by Duke University Press. The thesis, which she completed at the University of Hawaii, is the product of 14 years of research in Indonesia. It’s about villagers on the island of Java, and is entitled “Surviving Against the Odds.” Maybe something runs in the family, after all.
