Search and rescue workers on California's Mount Shasta found the body of a climber who was caught in a storm and fell ill near the summit. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office confirmed the body, found in a snow cave, to be that of Thomas Bennett, a 26-year-old chemical engineer from Oakland. Bennett was last seen on Saturday. During the descent, Bennett collapsed and became unresponsive. His climbing partner Mark Thomas was forced to move on and alert officials for a rescue effort. The likely cause for Bennett's unexpected collapse is not altitude sickness, but a stroke or pulmonary embolism—a blood clot developed in the legs that moves into the lungs from exertion and severe cold in high altitudes.
