They hold several eastern cities, and now they're marching for more: Libyan rebels are headed toward Tripoli under new direction. Defectors from Gaddafi's army have helped the opposition develop a unified military command in Zawiya, just 30 miles from the regime's stronghold in the capital. Assisted by the defectors, the rebels brandished tanks and antiaircraft weapons, rebuffing several attempts by Gaddafi's forces Sunday to wrestle them into submission. Hundreds of residents came out carrying machine guns and chanting the slogan of the pro-democracy uprising in Tunisia. Rebels also showed new strength and savvy by preparing to tap revenue from the vast oil reserves now under their control. Meanwhile, the U.N. Security Council announced financial sanctions against Libya and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the U.S. is reaching out to the rebels to “offer any kind of assistance.”
