Mitt Romney needs all the help he can get, so it’s good that his Mexican cousins are rooting for him. Romney’s father, the businessman and politician George Romney, was born in a Mormon colony in the state of Chihuahua, about four hours from El Paso, Texas, and some 40 of his distant relatives still live there. Romney has never visited them, even though they speak perfect English and many go to U.S. schools. “I think that if Mitt wins this president of the United States, it’s because God wants him there,” Miles, one of his cousins, said. Another, Meredith, was kidnapped by Mexican gangs for three days a couple of years ago. Many Mormons were sent to Mexico to continue practicing polygamy after the church banned it in 1890, so that’s why there’s a Romney branch in Mexico.
