The principal leaders of Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel are accused of selling more than 1 million pounds of cocaine, valued at $14 billion, from 2003 to 2014 in a federal indictment made against them and obtained by The Daily Beast. The leaders, including notorious kingpin El Chapo, were charged on multiple counts of drug distribution, murder, and conspiracy. The indictment describes a “network of corrupt police and political contacts” that aided in the transportation of “multi-ton quantities of heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana into the United States” by “land, air, and sea transportation.” While the cartel was violent toward anyone who crossed its path—it was charged with 12 murders and numerous attempted and hired murders—internal disputes were described as generally minimized and civil.
