Lawmakers in Alabama passed a restrictive bill Thursday night that would likely shutter two the state’s five abortion clinics. The legislation would treat the clinics like sex offenders—keeping them from operating within 2,000 feet of a middle or elementary school. It’s not yet clear if the measure will be signed by Republican Gov. Robert Bentley. One of the endangered clinics, in Huntsville, moved two years ago to fit restrictions passed in 2013. The bill’s supporters say the clinics attract disruptive protests, but opponents contend the protesters are uninvited and unwelcome. Several organizations have already promised to challenge the law if it’s signed.
