The International Organization for Migration claims that more than 1,000 refugees died in the past week in the Mediterranean. Officials have called the past eight days “one of the deadliest periods yet” in the migration crisis, which has lasted nearly four years. Overcrowded, poorly built boats have capsized, deflated, or tanked under the weight of their occupants, many of whom don’t know how to swim. UN refugee agency spokesman William Spindler said this year has been “particularly deadl”" in the Mediterranean, with 2,510 lives lost so far (compared to 1,855 during the same time period last year).
