President Donald Trump may have been trying to reassure his supporters about the country’s so-called “period of transition” on Fox News this week, but one reporter is still seeking an explanation for the “throttled” 401(k) accounts of soon-to-retire Americans. And he did so with extremely pointed comments directed at the administration.
Fox’s Senior White House Correspondent Peter Doocy called Trump out Tuesday as he waited for the White House press briefing to begin. “We also expect the White House to try to reassure folks who are sitting there looking at their 401(k)s going down and down and down,” Doocy said on air, days after Trump would not deny that the country was heading for a recession.
“This is a White House that came in trying to get federal workers to retire by the hundreds of thousands,” Doocy continued, referencing DOGE’s massive cuts to the federal government’s workforce. “It’s tough to make the argument that you should retire if your retirement accounts are getting throttled, which is what is happening. So we expect—we hope—for answers to all of these curiosities any minute.”

The network’s critique of the administration’s handling of the economy comes after its constant criticism of the Biden-Harris administration’s policies for “threatening your retirement savings.”
The stock market plummeted on Monday and has continued to drop Tuesday after Trump doubled down on his tariff threats, further frightening investors.
“I hate to predict things like that,” Trump said when asked by Fox’s Maria Bartiromo if a recession was imminent. “There is a period of transition, because what we’re doing is very big.”
