Five militants wearing suicide vests and burkas attacked a U.N. compound on Saturday in the largest attack on a U.N. target in Afghanistan this year. After one man blew himself up at the gate, four other attackers entered the base and began a gun battle with police. All five militants were killed, and a U.N. guard and a policeman were slightly hurt. The attack occurred in the western city of Herat, one of the safer places in Afghanistan according to the BBC’s Quentin Somerville. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. It’s the worst attack on a U.N. target in Afghanistan since October 2009, when 12 people, including six U.N. workers, were killed at a guesthouse in Kabul.
