Mira Sorvino Tears Up Over Weinstein Memories, Apologizes to 90s Con Crowd
‘CAREER WAS STIFLED’
Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino became emotional while discussing her turbulent career on Sunday, according to People. Appearing at a panel alongside Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon at 90s Con, the Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion star described how after winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1996 for Mighty Aphrodite, she had “a lot of wonderful offers.” But then, she said, “my career was stifled by Harvey Weinstein. So, I stopped doing [major] studio movies after 1998.” According to People, Sorvino then began tearing up and apologized to the crowd, adding by 1998, she had “rejected him [Weinstein] the third time.” Sorvino, an early accuser of Weinstein, alleged he had sexually harassed her during a project they worked on in 1995. She came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Weinstein in 2017 in a piece for The New Yorker by Ronan Farrow. “I stopped being a viable movie actress,” Sorvino said Sunday. “I still did indies and I still did television, but that was very hard.” Adding to Sorvino’s comments, Sarandon said: “I don’t think people talk enough about the people who facilitated the Harvey Weinsteins of the world that are still functioning that are equally responsible. That knew when they were sending people to a hotel, who didn’t pay attention when someone complained.” Weinstein was convicted of rape and sexual assault in New York in 2020, and in 2023 was convicted of rape and sexual assault in Los Angeles.
