‘Monkey Christ’ Painting Brings Tourists

A year after an elderly Spanish woman’s botched restoration of a church fresco went viral, her “monkey Christ” painting has become a tourist destination. So many people were flocking to see the painting that the town started charging an admission fee, which has raked in more than €50,000 so far. At first the painter, Cecilia Gimenez, was devastated when her work became an international laughingstock, but now she’s selling merchandise featuring the failed restoration and is celebrated by her fellow villagers for bringing in tourists.
