A senior colonel in the North Korean Reconnaissance General Bureau—an agency that carries out espionage operations against foreign countries—has defected to South Korea, officials said Monday. South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Moon Sang-gyun and Unification Ministry spokesman Jeong Joon-hee both reported the move, and CNN said the intelligence agent is the Hermit Kingdom’s highest level official to have defected to date.
