Having launched this fierce attack on Romney, Gingrich now must do everything he can to ensure that Romney does ultimately lose. In a re-elected Obama administration, Gingrich can say, "Don't blame me—I warned you that Romney was vulnerable." Maybe fellow-Republicans will agree, maybe they won't, but still he can live to fight another day. But in a Romney administration? Ouch. James Carville will have better access.
So Newt's path is clear. The question is: why do any GOP donors want to join this path? Answer: I doubt they do. Which is why I suspect that the much ballyhooed $5 million check from Sheldon Adelson to Gingrich's Super-PAC may soon be lost in the mail.
