HUNGER STRIKE

Red Cross Arrives at Guantánamo

As number of hunger strikers reaches 100.

A three-month long hunger strike at Guantánamo Bay—the gruesome details of which were exposed by The New York Times—escalated this week, prompting the Red Cross to step in. The U.S. military said Saturday that the number of strikers has reached 100, one fifth of whom are being force fed nutrients through feeding tubes. The strike has caught the attention of many humanitarian organizations, including the Red Cross, which sent five inspectors to the prison camp Saturday. The group's "ad-hoc assessment visit" was sparked by the news that the majority of prisoners had been put in single-cell lockdown. It is the organization's 93rd visit to the prison since it opened in 2002.
