Donald Trump has said it would be “bigger than Watergate” if a theory that the FBI spied on his presidential campaign turned out to be true. The theory, which Trump attributed to former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy, doesn’t appear to have evidence to back it up. The theory was also pushed Wednesday by Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani in an interview with Fox News, saying the FBI “possibly plac[ed] a spy in the Trump campaign.” Trump made similar claims in March 2017, again with no apparent evidence to back it up, and the claims were denied by President Obama’s spokesperson and the FBI. Tweeting Thursday morning, Trump said: “Wow, word seems to be coming out that the Obama FBI ’SPIED ON THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN WITH AN EMBEDDED INFORMANT.’ Andrew McCarthy says, ‘There’s probably no doubt that they had at least one confidential informant in the campaign.’ If so, this is bigger than Watergate!”
