Egypt’s not the only military firing on its own citizens. Remember Turkey? Riot police there are cracking down on protesters again, with tear gas and water cannons, dispersing about 3,000 as they attempted to enter Istanbul’s Gezi Park. The governor had warned groups planning a march to the sealed-off square that although the space would soon be open, it was not to be used for protests. “They must serve as a place of calm and tranquillity for all people,” he said. The original protests began last month and ended in a win for the demonstrators—the park's redevelopment plan was canceled—although four people were killed and about 7,500 were wounded.
