An education company catering to Chinese students estimates that as many as 8,000 of them are expelled from American colleges and universities annually—mostly because of cheating and poor academic performance. The estimate, based on survey responses from 1,657 students who were kicked out, represents a small fraction of the tens of thousands of Chinese students who come to the U.S. each year. “Chinese students used to be considered top-notch, but over the past five years their image has changed completely—wealthy kids who cheat,” said Chen Hang, chief development officer at WholeRen, the company that administered the survey. The majority of those expelled were from top-ranked U.S. universities, and indicated they were not prepared for the coursework.
