American arms sales hit a record high in 2011, a congressional study found, with many of the new buyers in Persian Gulf countries that fear an expansionist Iran. Foreign weapon sales brought in $66.3 billion for American companies last year, triple the amount from the previous year and totaling 75 percent of the total global arms market. The nonpartisan Congressional Research Service carried out the report. Among the weapons sold were 84 F-15 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia and a sophisticated Terminal High Altitude Air Defense system to the United Arab Emirates.
