Michael Slager, the ex-police officer who shot and killed unarmed black motorist Walter Scott in April 2015, was indicted this week by a federal grand jury on three new charges: violating civil-rights law, misleading investigators, and using a firearm in a violent crime. Slager has been free on bail in the state’s murder case against him, but is expected to be arrested again under the federal warrant. The three new charges could be viewed as a fallback measure should the state of South Carolina fail to convict Slager for the shooting death caught on camera. Slager would face no minimum prison term under the federal charges, but because Scott was killed, the ex-cop could get a maximum life sentence.
