What will all the teen starlets do for a tan now? Starting Jan. 1, minors in California will no longer be allowed to use tanning beds as part of a new law Gov. Jerry Brown signed Sunday. Current law allows minors who are at least 14 years old to use the ultraviolet tanning devices if they have written approval from their parents, but the new law will ban anyone under 18 from using the beds. The law was backed by the American Cancer Society and other health groups. Brown also signed a bill that allows anyone 12 years old or older to give consent for preventative treatment for sexually transmitted diseases. The bill includes the HPV vaccine, which recently became a hot-button issue on the Republican campaign trail.
