Just before President Obama’s planned visit in June, Indonesian police have halted a plot to assassinate Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and other dignitaries. The terrorists also planned to take over hotels and kill foreigners, especially Americans, in a sneak attack, similar to the November 2008 assault on Mumbai. The police have been interrogating 58 suspected militants captured in a series of raids over the last three months, many part of new terror group al-Qaeda in Aceh. This is the second assassination plot against the Indonesian president in a year. The last major terrorist attack in Indonesia was in July 2009.
