The results are in: The first review of the much-anticipated Sex and the City 2 was released Monday—and it’s more positive than you might think. The Hollywood Reporter’s Stephen Farber (who also contributes to The Daily Beast) writes that SATC2 is going to have its core audience of women eating out of its palm. The first movie was widely panned—but in the sequel, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Catrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon deliver on more fronts that fashion. “It has more cutting-edge humor than the first movie,” Farber writes. Much of the film takes place in Abu Dhabi (though it was filmed in Morocco), and includes several “scathing” jabs at Muslim culture. Farber writes that the movie is “at once proudly feminist and blatantly anti-Muslim, which means that it might confound liberal viewers.” He concludes: “There will be no complaints about too much of a good thing… this picture is going to be a smash.”
