Torrential rain and thunderstorms in the Midwest are shaping up to the be the region’s second-worst on record and have cut power to thousands of people in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Travelers have been especially hard-hit, with hundreds of flights out of the Chicago’s O’Hare, the second busiest in the nation, cancelled. The delays affected airports outside the region as well, with New York's Kennedy and airports in Philadelphia, Cleveland and Denver among those experiencing delays."It’s actually pretty impressive; we’re seeing wind, hail, rain, tornadoes, pretty much the sky is the limit," said Maryland meteorologist Travis Hartman. The storm is expected to travel east toward New York, though in a weaker form. Tornado alerts have been issued for much of the East Coast.
