Could Syria’s deadly protests get even worse? In a statement issued on Saturday, Syria’s Interior Ministry threatened greater government crackdown on protests demanding President Bashar al-Assad step down from his forty-year rule. The Ministry also expressed frustration that government gestures to appease protesters—such as dissolving the cabinet and repealing anti-citizenship laws for ethnic Kurds—have not in any way pacified the opposition, with the most violent demonstrations yet occurring Friday. Fresh clashes broke out on Saturday during funeral services for some of at least 32 people killed on Friday.
