Surgeons say a procedure to put a patch on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ skull was successful, and the Arizona Democrat is “recovering well.” After Giffords was shot in the head on Jan. 8, doctors removed a piece to allow pressure on her brain out. But with her recovery continuing, they decided she was now ready for a plastic implant that will cover the hole and better protect her head. The procedure was performed at the Houston rehabilitation center where she has been since leaving a Tucson hospital. She recently traveled to Florida to watch the final launch of NASA’s Endeavour space shuttle, which her husband, Mark Kelly, captained.
