In a move that has surprised legal experts, the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been called before a magistrate in England. Church president Thomas S. Monson is being sought to answer charges by an ex-Mormon bishop, Tom Philips, that key parts of the LDS faith are false and have been used to get financial contributions. Legal experts says there is zero chance the British government would seek to extradite Monson. “The Church occasionally receives documents like this that seek to draw attention to an individual’s personal grievances or to embarrass Church leaders. These bizarre allegations fit into that category,” said Eric Hawkins, a church spokesman.
