At least 54 people have died after a Russian trawler sank off the Kamchatka Peninsula in the western Pacific Ocean on Wednesday, Russia’s TASS news agency reported. Authorities said 63 people have been rescued and 15 are missing from the Dalniy Vostok freezer trawler, which had 132 people on board when it went down in the Sea of Okhotsk. Drifting ice may have punctured the vessel, prompting water to flood the engine compartment and sink the trawler within 15 minutes, Russian emergency services said. About two dozen ships are a part of the rescue effort looking for survivors in the freezing waters.
