Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl deferred entering a plea Tuesday at an arraignment before a judge in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Bergdahl reportedly deserted his unit in Afghanistan in 2009, and he was held captive by the Taliban for five years. Bergdahl has defended his actions, alleging that he walked off base in order to bring attention to leadership issues that he felt were putting his unit in danger. Bergdahl is charged with misbehavior before the enemy and desertion, which carry a life sentence and maximum five-year sentence, respectively. His next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 12.
