Starting January 1, 2016, no one under the age of 16 will be allowed to ride a hoverboard on public streets in California. The state's new law, first passed in October, will require helmets for anyone using a hoverboard and limit their use to streets with speed limits lower than 35 miles per hour. Riding the popular toys on public sidewalks, however, is not addressed by the law—cities and counties get to decide on rules for that.
