Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) slammed acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker during his questioning Friday, marking yet another tense moment in the House Judiciary Committee’s hearing. “This is an important hearing,” Jeffries began. “There are many Americans throughout the country who are confused. I’m confused. I really am. We’re all trying to figure out, ‘who are you?’ ‘where did you come from?’ and ‘how the heck did you become the head of the Department of Justice. So hopefully you can help me work through this confusion.” As Whitaker began to answer, Jeffries cut him off. “Mr. Whitaker, that was a statement, not a question,” Jeffries said. “I assume you know the difference.” Jeffries statement came after Whitaker sparred with many other Democratic congressmen, including Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX).
