The Senate managed to avert a national fiscal crisis. By a 67-31, it voted to close debate on the debt ceiling. The measure ultimately passed 55 to 43. Senator Ted Cruz threatened to filibuster, but he failed to rally enough of his fellow Republicans. With 12 Republicans, the Senate passed a measure to raise the nation’s debt ceiling without any conditions until March 2015.
