Somebody needs to go to confession. German bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst has been suspended by the Holy See due to accusations of lavish living, which didn't sit well with the new modest style of Pope Francis. Elst reportedly spent $42 million renovating his residence, leading to an uproar in a country known for its criticism of the church and money (ahem, Martin Luther). The suspension is pending the outcome of an investigation. Elst studied at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana in the 1980s and was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008.
