In one of the deadliest attacks to strike the region recently, a suicide bomber has killed at least 33 people at an army recruiting center in northern Afghanistan. The bombing occurred at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon in the Kunduz Province where the Taliban is attempting to subvert Afghan military recruitment, according to Afghan authorities. At least 42 people were wounded in the blast, and, although most of the victims were volunteers who were attempting to enroll in the national army, children were also among those killed. Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack, calling it "a serious crime and an unforgivable act of terror against those who wanted to join [the] army ranks to protect their nation." The Taliban has taken responsibility for the suicide bombing via text message sent out to journalists.
